Current Online Exhibition KIM TARPEY - prints and ceramics
Statement by Kim Tarpey - I have been inspired by John Percival to create angels. My angels are philosophers and observers of life and they aim to represent our ideal selves. They are responding to environmental concerns. Crisis situations and the aftermath emphasize the extremes of human nature both positive and negative.
The theme for this work came from hearing of a child recreating her experiences of The Black Saturday Bush Fire with play dough. She made a house and people and related the following story. 'First the fire came and we all went inside' (she put the figures inside). "Then the roof caught fire and we all went outside again" (she took the roof off and put the people outside).
I am fascinated by ceramic chards in my garden, they link directly to history and early ceramic traditions. Some of the melted glass pieces included in this work are from the 1962 fires.
